Default XP Question

When partying with people of different levels, how does xp break down? Is it split equally regardless of level? Do higher level chars get more? Or do they just lower the total xp gain for all?

P.S. If this is the wrong forum, sorry. Couldn't figure out where else to put it.

Higher level characters get less. The amount you get is purely dependent on the enemy's level relative to your own.

So if I am travelling with someone I'll get the same xp for a kill that I would if I were alone?

No, your experience is calculated based on your level, then divided by the number of people there. If you went out with one other person you get half the experience, regardless of whether that person is 20th or 1st level. Same is true of any number of people in the party; with 4 partners you figure what you would have gotten on your own, then divide by 5. There are to my knowledge some rules about XP and loot involving whether you were part of the combat - if you aren't you might not get anything, but it's pretty easy to be "involved" - a site I read said:

Quote:
The XP attribution rule is very simple. You get XP from a dead monster if any one of these conditions is true:
- you were attacked by this monster
- you attacked this monster
- you used a skill on this monster
- you used a skill on a group member who is already eligible for XP gain

Note that the last condition is recursive. If you used a buff on a monk who himself healed a warrior engaged in melee, you get XP. So you can create chains of XP eligibility even if you weren't directly involved in the monster death.
Which seems like a sensible thing, so it is hopefully true.
